Craniofacial Development

Our understanding of craniofacial development has increased enormously during the last few years. At the same time as the full genomes of different species have been revealed, the inheritance patterns of many human illnesses have been discovered thus bringing the possibilities of improved treatment of these conditions into our hands. As well as improving our appreciation of extreme conditions this new data brings us new insight into normal craniofacial development as well as into minor deviations from normal development. Thus orthodontics is entering into a new era where diagnosis and treatment are based on a more secure understanding of the aetiology of abnormalities.
